Coaching Seminar

The beginning of the year seems to be a good time to get more familiar with coaching, counselling and related topics which have the potential not only to support our career development but also to balance our lifes and develop us as human beings.

Therefore the CEMS Alumni Association Prague is organizing a coaching seminar led by professional coaches.
TOPICS
Some of the topics the seminar will cover are:
  • What is coaching? What is the difference between coaching and mentoring?
  • What type of coach should you look for?
  • What is counselling? How could it help you?
  • Is there something that would keep you from having a coach, counsellor?
  • Cultural aspects of coaching/counselling. How is coaching/counselling perceived in CZ vs. other countries?
Also, there will one or two practical examples of a counselling session - we will just need volunteers for that :-).
SPEAKERS
The speakers will be two experienced professionals with different background and different approaches to coaching and counselling
PLACE AND REGISTRATION
Please register in the google form.
Update: the event will take place at VSE, Rajska budova 438 (for the older ones - it is the newest building at Zizkov).
After the event there will be a chance to move to a nearby restaurant and continue discussion in an informal environment.
So - mark Tuesday 15 January 7:00 PM in your calendars and register here. We will confirm your registration by 7 January as the paying members of the CAA will be given priority places.
We are looking forward to meeting you there!

News from St. Gallen: CAA General Assembly 2012

Dear CEMS Alumni, we would like to bring you summary of the biggest CEMS Alumni International Event of 2012. The University of St. Gallen (SGH) hosted this year's CEMS Annual Events, traditionally connected with students' graduation, academic meetings and most importantly for you, with General Assembly of the CEMS Alumni Association.

The official Alumni meeting took place on December 1st and we had representatives of 10 Local Alumni Commitees voting this time (CZ, AT, DE, FR, UK, IT, DK, PL, BE, CH). Based on new statuses of the CAA, local committees could elect some members of the new CAA executive body - the CAA Board (it should stay in active mandate for three years). See new structure of the elected CAA Board below, there were some great candidates among junior and senior Alumni and also among dedicated members of Local Committees who are willing to help promote CEMS Alumni network on international level. This new board now has to vote on the position of the upcoming CAA President.

St.Gallen was beautifuly covered with snow and with Xmas markets season starting, it was a very enjoyable stay for both students and alumni, not to mention great Swiss organization skills around the whole event. Alumni program was also very full this time. Besides Friday's and Saturday's parties, there were special Alumni Cheese Fondue dinner on Saturday and Alumni Brunch on Sunday, both organized by LC Switzerland. This created nice atmosphere for Alumni to talk, get to know each other or meet again. If you want to participate as Alumni enjoying the power of CEMS network, do not forget to pay your CAA membership fee for 2013 and you can enjoy next year's event in Barcelona :-).

Other key callouts from Alumni Assembly:
  • CAA Board will hire the CAA director in first half of 2013 and this will be full time paid employee responsible for operations of the CAA Board. CEMS Headquarters did not sponsor CAA anyhow in 2012, but in 2013, they plan to contribute on professionalisation of the CAA, under condition of hiring the CAA director (could be up to 72,500 EUR).
  • Alumni membership fee stays at 60 EUR per person for 2013.
  • CAA holds 109,996€ in open reserves and 50,900€ in reserves on funding of life-long members (split in multiple accounts, 76,500€ is now in risk-free savings account since 11/2012), CAA can propose how these funds could be used going forward or LCs could propose to organize a bigger pan-European event, new CAA board will be able to decide on use of these reserves. These are international CAA funds, they do not belong to dedicated LCs.
  • Update on Linked In Group: 5250 members connected, we should more promote to raise awareness of CEMS through LinkedIn, please add CEMS ecucation to your profile, among those 5250 members, we have some very good senior profiles, they might not be paying members anymore, but they connected through LinkedIn.
  • CAA needs to work on career service offerings – besides personal networking, this area has never been very successful, CEMS job market is empty and LinkedIn group slowly starts bringing some interesting job offers, but we should have a separate professional db where paying alumni can look for job opportunities – very good added value. Torsten R. presented proposal to use French company manageurs.com which is active with alumni associations in French speaking countries. They would need to translate their product fully into English and also start offering more opportunities outside of French speaking regions, but they are very flexible in terms of systematic solution. Corporate partners could also use special access, paying alumni could access exclusively.

Pics from winetasting

Have you ever been thinking of the difference between Frankovka from Southern Moravia and Southern Hungary?
Actually, the difference is big, indeed. While the Hungarian one was pretty complex and rich resembling some of good Italian wines the Moravian was little bit less balanced and, surprisingly, somehow smoky. According to the sommelier the smokiness is related to the special vineyard area it comes from. Interesting stuff.
The CEMS winetasting event was just great – the selection of wines from the Austro-Hungarian region as well as the choice of food matching wines and last but not least interactive approach of the sommeliers. A pity more alumni couldn’t come. Let me share with you also several pics.
Our thanks go both to the participants and the sommeliers from Via Vinum who lead the degustation.

I believe this wasn’t the last wine experience of CEMS in Prague. Next time I hope more of you will join us!

3rd in FT ranking this year

It is our pleasure to share with all of you the mail from Roland Siegers:

"Dear CEMS community,

It is with great pleasure in my capacity as CEMS Executive Director that I can announce that the CEMS MIM is this year ranked the n°3 pre-experience Master’s in Management in the world in the global Financial Times ranking. 18 CEMS member schools appear in total, including 4 in the top 10, underlying the excellence of the CEMS alliance and all its members on the M.Sc. segment. Congratulations should be extended to our Swiss member school the University of St Gallen, whose Master in Strategy and International Management was ranked n°1 for 2012.

Of particular significance to our alliance is the continued dominance of the CEMS MIM on international criteria, as has been the case since the inception of the ranking in 2005, underlining that our programme is the only truly global programme to appear therein. If we also take into account the fact that the CEMS MIM has featured permanently in the top 3 since the ranking began in 2005 we can be doubly proud of these years of outstanding achievement.

This year, the CEMS MIM improved in 7 categories of the ranking compared with the 2011 edition, including its best-ever “Aims Achieved” (alumni rate of satisfaction) score of 88%. You can read more in the CEMS FT ranking press release.

Congratulations to all of you for the excellent results – with a special mention to the CEMS Class of 2009 that was surveyed by the FT this year.

Warm regards,

Roland Siegers

CEMS Executive Director"

I hope that the alumni here in Prague will contribute to the further growth of the CEMS community as well as the benefits the programme is providing to all its stakeholders. I believe so far we are doing pretty well :-).

Feedback from the CEMS Alumni Networking Dinner

Dear fellow Alumni, few days back on Thu Aug 23, we organized another social networking event for CEMS Alumni based in Prague. Nice atmosphere and service in La Boca restaurant (http://laboca.cz), decent three-course dinner, interesting mix of junior and senior Alumni and facilitated rotation around tables made this networking dinner a very pleasant evening for most attendees (1.25 rating on a scale from 1-best to 5-worst).
After free welcome drink, guests were seated to four tables based on industry/field or type of work they do. We had following groups who enjoyed delicious tapas starters together:
Table 1- IT/telco/engineering/construction (5 Alumni)
Table 2 - Advisory/Finance (8 Alumni)
Table 3 - Enterpreneurial minds (5 Alumni)
Table 4 - Consumer goods/advertising (5 Alumni)

Main course was dedicated to seating based on current professional priorities:
Table 1- Thinking about new job opportunities (7 Alumni)
Table 2 - No changes planned/fresh work-life balance duties (6 Alumni)
Table 3 - Change of employer in last 12 months (4 Alumni)
Table 4 - Recent or planned relocations/expansion of business opportunities (6 Alumni)
For desserts, everyone could choose their own seat and talk to other Alumni or continue discussing interesting open topics.
I also wanted to share with you few suggestions and comments, which I received from 8 out of 22 participants through a feedback form sent to all attendees one day after the event:
  • Mixed tables were very nice concept, overall: nice people and nice evening
  • I want more of these - this concept is great, when is the next one? Definitely engage more senior alumni and focus on attracting the
  • Great food, good choice of place in the city center
  • There was a good mix of people I had already known and people I had not met before; it was also good that people from various generations were present
  • Probably some more moderation could be good? - but not 100% sure about this as people really had fun and enjoyed it. I am quite interested on what the other will say on this topic.
  • Price of food vs. quality might have been more balanced.
  • Not everybody talked just business, which was positive. Maybe table according to age of participants might be good idea.
  • Next time, we could also mix "recently changed job" with "looking for jobs"
  • Great to meet fellow CEMSies and compare lifestories and hear about the current development in CEMS/VSE.
  • More space in the venue please (was a bit crowded, hard to mingle), more air conditioning :-).
  • Maximum six people per one table would be better.

For more pictures, click here
We thank you for this feedback and will continue preparing some interesting events for you going forward, taking above suggestions into consideration.

To conclude, you may enjoy  this short video, which I took precisely at a moment when there was a serious talk about fresh blueberry juice at the most senior Alumni table :-).

Would you like to share your experience with CEMS students?

Dear alumni
For me being an alumnus and working on behalf of the whole CEMS community means focusing on three areas: alumni (professional and other events), students (e.g. Meet the...) and the university.

This time I would like to focus on the third one.

Recently I met Jiri Hnilica, the CEMS Academic Director and vice-dean of the Faculty of Business Administration and we talked about the ways alumni could support CEMS at the university. We came up with two options:
  • Lecturing at some of the basic courses at the Faculty of Business Administration for bachelor degree students in order to attract more of them to apply for CEMS (subjects like management, business economics, or logistics)
  • Lecturing at some of the CEMS courses - subjects like international strategy, corporate finance, international marketing or managerial psychology
While the first one is supposed to be held in Czech and on rather basic level, the latter one should be in English and focused already on some rather specific, more advanced topics.

So - would you be interested in sharing your experience with the students? For you that would mean not only preparing 45-90 minutes lecture based on discussion with the tutor, but also an opportunity to promote shortly your company, present yourself and enjoy presenting to CEMS students or to an audience of up to 300 fresh minds. It does not mean only some time spent on preparation and presentation, but also development of your skills and your promotion in your company.

If you are interested please drop me a message and I will send you more details - list of subjects (incl. syllabus) and contact information.

I will be really glad to hearing from you - and helping the university together.

Best regards

Vojtech Oplestil

Main thoughts from the networking seminar

As you might now we had a seminar focused on networking two weeks ago.
A diverse set of speakers, some 20 alumni and an open discussion which continued after the seminar in a restaurant.

The speakers preparing for the discussion

The audience during the event...

...and afterwards

It is hard to collect and share all ideas mentioned, however I tried to put some of them on a poster-like picture. I hope you will find them useful and benefit from them. Just click on the picture to enlarge it.

Main ideas

I believe the networking issue is an interesting yet ambiguous one and therefore learning something new about it is just useful. Therefore I collected five articles you may want to read (with my short comments in brackets).
  1. 10 Tips for Successful Business Networking (maybe too general but useful, especially when you are just about to start thinking about real networking)
  2. 7 Tips for Networking (seven simple and common sense tips for networking during an event - I like this and the following article most from this selection)
  3. Networking for Introverts: 3 Tips for Success (being rather an introvert myself this article made me feel a bit more confident when it comes to networking)
  4. 4 Networking Mistakes You Don't Know You're Making (very, very simple - but always good to keep in mind)
  5. 7 Reasons Networking Can Be a Professional Development Boot Camp (go directly to page two to finad the reasons - no top tips but still quite useful)
I would like to thank to all speakers (Andrea Kralova, Zdenek Rudolsky, Jan Maly and Richard Hansko) for their contribution as well as to Honza Kubik and Thomson Reuters who provided the room for discussion and provided refreshment during as well as after the event.

We are looking forward to other professionally oriented events.

New CEMS Academic Member

It is a long time ago when only European universities were members of CEMS. Recently one more university outside of Europe joined the programme. It is good to know that the programme becomes more and more international.

Let me quote from the mail from Francois Collin:
Hong Kong University of Science and Technology has been elected new CEMS academic member by the Executive Board (unanimity of expressed votes). Welcome to our 27th CEMS school! Their CEMS MIM programme is due to start in fall 2013 in Hong Kong. The vote still needs to be ratified at the CEMS Annual Meeting in St Gallen on 30th November 2012.

Meet the Sales 14.5.2012 Review

The regular event “Meet the….” took place on May 14th with the focus on Sales this time. We were happy to welcome 20 students and 5 following CEMS Alumni in the role of speakers:

Jan Šach, Country Manager at Indesit
Jan Kubík, Sales Specialist, Investment Banking at Thomson Reuters
Zdenek Řiháček, District Sales Manager at Procter and Gamble
Stanislav Hába, Sales Manager at PPF Bank
Jan Rožek, Key Account Manager at L‘Oréal

The speakers were covering various businesses and talked about their career path as well as the current job position with passion. They helped to better understand what it means to work at Sales, what personal characteristics are essential and what challenges could one expect when working at Sales. The numerous group of students and alumni, afterwards, moved to the close restaurant Sklep where students could discuss with professionals in more informal way.

We thank to all the participants for their time and contribution.

We are looking forward to welcoming you at other professional and social events!

Charleyova teta - Divadlo Bez Dozoru v ROKOKU
